Bittersweet weekend

On Saturday, my dear friend from college, Kristina, who lives in Birmingham, Ala., came to visit me and meet Reed. We had a great day Saturday catching up on old times and eating sushi.

This morning, I awoke early to sounds of my cat, Sasha, whom I have had for 11 years, howling. We found her near a large pool of blood, laying on her side, panting. She was cold and lifeless, barely breathing. Stina and I rushed her to the animal hospital where they tried to determine what was wrong. Her temperature was so low, it did not even register and they put her on oxygen while trying to warm her up. They are not sure what is wrong with her and are unsure of the prognosis. We hope to learn more soon.

A few hours before I woke up, Stina got a call from Sweden by her sister telling her that her grandmother was very ill. She left a day early to go back home in case she needs to travel to Sweden to be with her grandmother. All in all, today is panning out to be a terrible one. Chris and Reed are doing their best to cheer me up, and it is working. Just looking at my sweet little man makes me feel a lot better.

Please say a prayer for Sasha and Stina’s grandmother, that both will be comfortable.

UPDATE, Sunday afternoon

Just got the call I was dreading — Sasha died at the animal hospital. My heart is broken into a million pieces. I loved that cat like a person. I had her for 11 years. She was the sweetest kitty I ever had, and loved me the most. They have no idea what caused her to get so sick so quick or what caused her death. I am devastated.
